The Suzhou style
Suzhou
(map)
lies on China's famous Grand Canal and is characterized by
its network of smaller canals and its white houses with gray roofs,
whether old or new. This includes I.M. Pei's ultra-modern Suzhou Museum
(map, location shown prior to construction).
At night the city is beautifully illuminated, such as in the city center along
Lin Dun Road
(map)
near the Suzhou Garden View Hotel and at the Pan Men (Pan Gate)
(map)
along the rectangle of wide moats surrounding the center.
The following scrollable panoramas were taken at Fengqiao Scenic Area
(map) (the first spans 360 degrees).
The next 360-degree panorama was taken in the Shantang Street
(map) area, showing one of the city gates,
which includes a boat entrance into the city (beyond the small stone bridge).
Pagodas and gardens
Suzhou is also famous for its gardens and pagodas, such as the North Pagoda
(map).
Perhaps the best-known among Suzhou's many gardens is the
Zhuozheng or Humble Administrator's Garden
(map),
shown next in spring.
The next three views show the busy Shizi Lin (Lion Grove Garden),
the last view being from the Ou Yuan (Double Garden).
