City of Berkeley
The university town of Berkeley
(map) faces California's Golden Gate
across the San Francisco Bay. It is described at
Wikipedia.
The following view from atop the Berkeley hills shows the Golden Gate
spanned by its Golden Gate Bridge straight ahead, with the Pacific Ocean beyond.
Small Alcatraz Island with its famous now-closed prison lies in front of the bridge.
At far left is the city of San Francisco linked to the city of Oakland by
a long bridge that tunnels through Yerba Buena Island.
At far right is Marin County, behind wooded Angel Island.
In front of the Golden Gate Bridge is the Berkeley Marina,
linked by University Avenue to the Berkeley campus of the University of California,
seen at the foot of the Berkeley hills to the left, and marked by its
trademark clock tower, the Campanile.
On the hills in the foreground is located Berkeley Lab
(Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), including a circular building
containing the former Bevatron particle accelerator.
University of California at Berkeley
The
University of California at Berkeley
(map) is a prime example of the US-style campus with its
park-like setting. Student life centers on Lower Sproul Plaza seen next.
The Golden Bear is the mascot of "Cal", as the university is nicknamed.
The 360-degree panorama gives an overview of the plaza and is scrollable.
A Cal landmark is Sather Gate, while the Campanile (Sather Tower),
modeled after St Mark's Campanile in Venice, stands out from many locations,
with its height of 307 ft or 94 m.
The campus offers ample green space for quiet reflection
(scroll the next view of "Faculty Glade").
Old and new buildings mix harmoniously among redwood, eucalyptus and other trees.
