Golden Gate and Golden Gate Bridge
The city of San Francisco
(map)
borders the Golden Gate with its famous bridge leading north to affluent Marin County.
The city is described at
Wikipedia,
and the bridge is also described at
Wikipedia.
The Golden Gate Bridge
(map) is a marvel of design, engineering and styling.
It was built during the 1930s depression and opened in 1937.
Its red color gives it a distinct identity and fits well in the landscape,
as in the next views from Lincoln Park overlooking the Golden Gate.
The next two panoramas look north toward Marin County and
east toward downtown San Francisco, Oakland and the "East Bay".
The islands in the middle of San Francisco Bay are the larger Angel Island
(where immigrants from Asia were processed in the past)
and the smaller Alcatraz (where criminals were imprisoned in earlier times).
Another favorite with tourists is Pier 39
(map),
seen first with its colony of noisy sea lions.
The panorama shows the Golden Gate through the windows,
and Alcatraz and Angel Island behind the tour boat.
A few steps from Pier 39 lie colorful Fisherman's Wharf
(map) and other piers.
Golden Gate Park
Large Golden Gate Park
(map) contains many attractions,
including the greenhouse of the Conservatory of Flowers
and the modern de Young Museum (with its twisted tower containing
a great panoramic observation deck).
From the tower of the de Young Museum we can also see
the California Academy of Sciences, a museum of natural history
with a truly green roof.
Behind it are the San Francisco campus of the University of California
(a medical school) and Sutro Tower
(map) with its TV, radio and other transmitters.
Downtown
Another famous museum lies downtown: the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,
also seen in the panorama of Yerba Buena Gardens
(map).
